BH Week #8
Featured Artisan - Judy Cogo Designs
This week’s featured artisan for Blog Ring
#2 at It’s Better Handmade is Judy Cogo, owner of Judy Cogo Designs. Judy is a self-taught jewelry artisan living
in a small community north of Toronto, Canada called Stouffville. With
an eye for fashion she was always searching for just the right accessory to
match her outfits. In 2004 she began designing jewelry for herself, then
selling to friends and family, then attending craft shows, selling in a local
store and now selling on On-line venues. Retired from a career in the
financial services industry, Judy now follows her passion by creating designs
for any occasion incorporating a love of gemstones, wire wrapping and crochet. Her
creations are made using semi-precious gemstones, bead crochet, wire wrapping
and other materials to obtain distinctive exquisite pieces of wearable art. Judy
loves learning new techniques and her jewelry styles are continually evolving
as she integrates new materials and designs.
In addition to creating luxurious pieces of wearable art, Judy also loves the outdoors, nature, and is an avid reader and loves working and making things with her hands.
Being a jewelry artisan myself, this week I decided to choose items from Judy's shop that I would love to be able to create myself but have not yet developed the skill required.
A seed bead crocheted rope necklace for the woman who desires an original handmade work of jewelry art. The necklace is very versatile as there is lots of sparkle for evening outings, weddings, formal affairs, and as the large focal pendant can be removed, the necklace on its
own can be worn for a more casual informal style, or paired with another pendant.
This beadwoven crochet rope is handmade by Judy with clear aurora borealis (AB) seed beads on a dark blue polyamid thread and the focal pendant is stunning with light Sapphire colored Swarovski crystals. A matching pair of crocheted earrings complete this original design.
This Wire Scuplted Labradorite Gemstone Pendant is handmade with a 30mm x 20mm Labradorite cabochon and non-tarnish silver wire. The pendant measures 2 1/4 inches from the top of the bail to the bottom of the wire. The bail is large enough to allow the pendant to be worn on different types of cord, chain or ribbon.
This is a beautiful handmade dark blue cabochon Dolomite stone wire wrapped in sterling silver-filled wire, in the Pharaoh's ring design, originally designed by Tom Phelan.
This handmade chain maille bracelet is made in the Japanese 12-in-2 weave, using stainless steel rings. Stainless steel is extremely durable, never tarnishes and the shine improves with age. The bracelet feels very smooth, soft and slinky on the wrist. It is also available in jeweler's brass which resembles gold but at a fraction of the cost. The bracelet measures 7 1/2 inches in length, 1 inch wide and closes with a stainless steel clasp.
